Almaty

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan with a population of over 2 million people. For more than 60 years Almaty was the capital of "Kazakh SSR" within the Soviet Union and independent Kazakhstan, in 1997 the status of the capital of Kazakhstan was assigned to the city of Astana (Central Kazakhstan).
Currently, Almaty is the cultural, financial, sporting and tourist capital of Kazakhstan. More than 60% of foreign tourists visiting Kazakhstan choose a trip to Almaty and the neighbourhood of the southern metropolis.
